STATEMENT XIII
I am a White Plains High School alumni. I was grateful enough
to obtain an education in a school district that promotes diversity and equality. As a middle
class, Afro-Latina woman, I always felt that I, along with all of my peers, regardless of
socio-economic status, were granted the same opportunities to succeed. This was apparent
beginning in our elementary schools. White Plains School District consists of five elementary
schools spread throughout the city. Parents of White Plains students are given the chance to tour
each elementary school and request their students be placed in whatever school they feel is right
for them. Most parents get their first or second elementary school choice. Because of this, each
school has an equal amount of students coming from various socioeconomic backgrounds. In
addition, all students have access to support services, enrichment programs, and academic
assistance. Social workers and school psychologists are available in each of the five schools, as
well. From elementary school to high school, every student is accepted and supported by
classmates, teachers, and administrators. The White Plains School Districts genuinely cares
about making sure our students have the same opportunities to become successful, regardless of
race, ethnicity, health, or economic status.
